BYTE

Legal

Privacy Policy

Effective 22 September 2026. Last updated 9 October 2026.

The short version. BYTE has no accounts, no logins, no payments, no ads, no analytics SDK, and requests no device permission — not your camera, your microphone, your photos, or your location. Playing needs nothing from you at all. We store a random identifier in your browser so a dropped connection can find its way back to your own body, and — if the game crashes or errors — a short technical report describing what went wrong. Two things are optional and up to you: a display name, which other players see, and an email address, which keeps your history and banked totals together and is never shown to anyone. Here is how to have anything deleted.

1. Who we are

BYTE is developed and operated by Beacon Light Investments ("we", "us"), which is the controller of the information described in this policy.

Contact: kyled@beaconlightinvestments.com, or the postal address on our contact page.

2. What this policy covers

This policy applies to:

  • the website at byte.gorged.io, including the in-browser game; and
  • the BYTE mobile application, on whichever platforms it is released.

It does not cover anything a third party does on its own account — for example, the Apple App Store, whose own privacy policy governs your relationship with them.

3. What we collect

This is the complete list. Nothing here is aspirational or planned — it describes what actually runs today.

  • A random client identifier. The first time you open BYTE, your browser or device generates a random identifier and stores it locally (browser localStorage, or the equivalent on the native app). It is sent to our game server only so that if your connection drops and you reconnect — or you reopen a second tab — you are returned to the same seat in the arena instead of starting a new one. It is not a name, an email, or anything else that identifies you personally; we cannot use it to look up who you are, and it never leaves our game server.
  • Your display name, if you set one. It is shown to other players in the arena and on the public leaderboard. Please don't use your real name.
  • Your email address, if you enter one. It is used only to file your history under one record across runs: kills, pellets, your biggest block, the worlds you have played in, time on peaks, and everything you bank. Your email is never shown to other players — the public leaderboard is built from a separate record that cannot hold one — and is never used to contact you. We do not verify it, so please do not enter one that is not yours.
  • Crash and error reports. If the game encounters an internal error, it may send a short technical report — what went wrong and the surrounding game state — to our server, so we can fix it. These reports do not contain your name, email, or any other personal identity, and the server does not log the IP address of this specific request.
  • Standard web server logs. Like almost every website, our web server records the IP address, the page or file requested, the time of the request, and the browser's user-agent string for ordinary page and asset requests. These exist to operate the site and investigate abuse or faults, and are not linked to your gameplay or your client identifier.
  • If you email us, we hold that email — your address, your message, and our reply — so that we can answer you.
  • Settings on your device. Your name, email, skin, sound and theme choices are stored on your own device so you don't have to enter them again.
  • Nothing else. No accounts, no login, no payments, no advertising or tracking pixels, no third-party analytics SDK, and no cookies beyond what is described above. The game requests no access to your camera, microphone, photo library, contacts, or location, on any platform.

4. Why we use it, and on what basis

The client identifier and crash reports exist to make the game work and to fix it when it breaks — a legitimate interest in operating the service, and in the EU/UK sense, processing necessary to provide a service you have asked for by opening the app. Server logs exist for the same reason every website keeps them: operating and securing the site. The optional name and email rest on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by clearing them and asking us to delete what we hold.

5. Children

BYTE is not directed at children under 13, and is not distributed in the Apple Kids Category. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. Nothing in the game requires personal information: the name and email are optional, and a player can leave the email blank and use a made-up name. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has entered an email address or a real name, email kyled@beaconlightinvestments.com and we will act on it.

6. Who we share it with

Your display name and scores are visible to other players and on the public leaderboard; that is the point of them. Beyond that, we do not sell it, and we do not trade it. We use infrastructure providers (our hosting provider) to run the server this data passes through; they process it on our behalf and do not use it for their own purposes. We may disclose it if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Beacon Light Investments, our players, or the public.

7. How long we keep it

The client identifier lives in your own browser or device storage until you clear it yourself, or until an arena reassigns the seat it once pointed at (typically within minutes of a disconnect). The history filed under an email is kept until you ask us to delete it. Crash reports and server logs are kept only as long as needed to investigate and fix the issue they describe, and are deleted on an ordinary rolling schedule after that.

8. Delete my data

BYTE has no account. Unless you entered an email, nothing on our side is tied to you, and most of what this policy describes lives only on your own device:

  • The client identifier is deleted the moment you clear your browser's site data for byte.gorged.io, or uninstall the app. There is nothing on our side that identifies it as yours to delete separately.
  • The history filed under an email is deleted when you email us from that address and ask.
  • If you have emailed us, or want any crash report you believe we hold investigated or removed, email kyled@beaconlightinvestments.com and we will locate and delete whatever we can identify as yours.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete information we hold, to receive it in a portable format, to object to or restrict processing, and to withdraw consent where processing relies on it. We apply these to everyone who asks, wherever they are, rather than checking your jurisdiction first. To exercise any of them, email kyled@beaconlightinvestments.com. If you are in the EU, the UK, or another region with a data protection authority, you also have the right to complain to that authority — we would appreciate the chance to resolve it first.

10. Where your data goes

We operate from the United States, and information we hold is processed there. If you are outside the United States, using BYTE involves transferring your information across borders.

11. Security

Traffic to the site and the game service is encrypted in transit with TLS. Access to production systems is limited to people who need it. We never receive or store payment card numbers.

No system is perfectly secure, and we will not claim otherwise. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as the law requires.

12. Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, the effective date at the top changes with it. If a change materially affects what we collect or what we do with it, we will give notice in the app or on this site before the change takes effect, not after.
